SIP Telephone Lines
SIP telephone lines, or more accurately, SIP Trunking is the cutting edge way to connect your communications system to the public network, or more basically, telephone dial tone. SIP trunking can be delivered by almost any legitimate and fly by night carrier. The key is knowing what carriers are legitimate and which ones are not going to be around after a few years. CSM only works with the most competent and recognized leaders in SIP trunking. SIP trunks can be delivered over the public internet, or over direct data circuits. CSM recommends that companies with more than a few telephone lines have their SIP trunks delivered over a direct data circuit, not over the public internet as there is no guarantee of good voice quality over the public internet.
How do SIP trunks work? Well, it can get complicated, but CSM can help explain the solution. Simply put, SIP trunks are telephone service, dial tone, that come to your office over the internet. That internet may be the public internet such as FIOS, DSL, or cable modem provided internet, or a private data connection, such as a T-1, MPLS, or other dedicated connection. One contracts for as many concurrent call sessions as one may need at any given time, similar to “lines” in old terminology. If you are a small office you may only need two or three concurrent call sessions. If you are a large office that currently has a PRI then you may need 23 concurrent call sessions.
But there are other questions that need to be answered before you can dive into the world of SIP trunking. Can your communications system accept direct SIP trunks or will you need a gateway? Should SIP trunks be your primary dial tone, or simply a backup? How much bandwidth will you need? Should you purchase “bursting” on any of the trunks? How many concurrent call sessions will you need? CSM can help you navigate these questions and deploy a solution that will work for you, not shoe horn you into a product that we get the most commission off of.
Do you have multiple properties, perhaps your business is hospitality with multiple hotels. SIP trunks can allow you to meet your flag’s specifications while saving hundreds of dollars monthly. SIP trunks can allow you to share as many trunks as are needed among your properties. For example, if you have 4 properties and are obligated to have 24 lines at each property you can pay for only 24 SIP trunks and have them dynamically distributed among the hotels – saving you real dollars each and every month while meeting the flag’s obligations.
